溶接とは金属を文字どおり「溶かして接合する」ことです。
金属は加熱や加圧によって融点（個体が液体になり始める温度）に達すると溶け始めます。溶接は、材料の接合部分を一部分だけ溶かした状態で冷やし固め、一つに接合する加工方法です。
ちなみに、金属の融点は鉄が約1,530℃、銅が約1,080℃など非常に高いため、溶接には多くのエネルギーを使います。そのため、溶接を行う職人になるには、何年もの経験や学習が必要といわれています。
